How Does Medicare Work?

We have the answers.

Original Medicare: Part A & Part B

Original Medicare is made up of Part A & Part B. When you turn 65, you will need to sign up for Original Medicare before signing up for a Supplement or Advantage Plan. You can sign up three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your birthday, or three months after your birthday. As long as you are signed up, your Medicare will start the first of the month of your 65th birthday.

Medicare Supplements

The first option you have to cover the gaps in your Original Medicare is to add on a supplement. Medicare Supplements are added to Original Medicare to help cover the gaps in coverage in Part A and Part B. You can sign up for a supplement 3 months before your 65th birthday, the month of, or three months after your 65th birthday.

Part D: Prescription Drug Plans

Once you are enrolled in Original Medicare and have chosen a supplement you will also want to sign up for a prescription drug plan. It is important that you sign up for a prescription drug plan during your Initial Enrollment Period. That period is 3 months before your 65th birthday, the month of, and three months after.

Part C: Advantage Plans

The second option you have to help fill in the gaps in Original Medicare is to enroll in an advantage plan. Advantage plans are owned by private health insurance companies and encompass both Part A and Part B within their plan. They also often include a Part D prescription drug plan.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

important questions answered for your convenience

When should I sign up for Original Medicare?

There is a 7 month window to enroll in Original Medicare. You can enroll 3 months before your 65th birthday, the month of, or 3 months after.

When can I add aditional coverage?

After you have signed up for original Medicare, you can choose either a medigap plan or an advantage plan. As soon as your Part B goes into affect you will have a 6 month window called your Open Enrollment Period to choose a Medigap plan. If you decide to go with an advantage plan, you will have a 7 month window called your Initial Enrollment Period where you can pick a plan. You can enroll 3 months before your 65th birthday, the month of, or 3 months after.

Advantage vs Medigap.. What's the Difference?

Advantage plans resemble typical employer insurance (deductibles, copays, max out of pocket). The cost to have this plan is typically low but you will pay more out of pocket when you need to utilize your plan. Medigap has a higher monthly premium. However, when using your plan you will pay very little out of pocket.

What if I continue working past age 65?

If your employer insurance is sufficient, you can start Medicare Part A and delay Part B until you fully retire. Make sure your employer coverage is deemed creditable.

How do I compare plans?

Jake and Heidi are independent contractors which allows them to shop many different insurance carriers to find the best fit and price for you.

Do I need an agent to navigate Medicare?

Using an agent is of no cost to you but also not necessary. There are other methods available for finding plans such as self help websites and call centers.
